Going to SXSW Interactive? Interested in video on the Web?

February 18th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I’m happy and honored to say I’ll be presenting at South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive this year. I’m leading one of the Core Conversation sessions and the topic is captioning web video. The conversation title is “Cooking up Accessible Video for the Web” and it’s going to be on Sunday, March 9, at 3:30.

The session description follows:

It’s hard to miss the impact of video delivered over the Web. Though not anything new, in recent years the ease of publishing video and the ease of delivery using Adobe’s Flash format has led to the explosion of web video’s popularity, from viral video to the YouTube Presidential debates. As it’s gotten easier to publish video over the Web, it has also gotten easier to create captions for video on the Web. This conversation will be in two parts. One part HOWTO, one part what can be done from here.In the HOWTO portion, we’ll walk through and talk about software that makes it easy to create caption files. Primarily, we’ll look at NCAM (National Center for Accessible Media)’s software, MAGpie (Media Access Generator). MAGpie has several output possibilities for captions. We will focus on the Distribution Format Exchange Profile of the Timed-Text Authoring Format 1.0 (DXFP).The other part of the conversation will be about how you can publish your captioned video. Whether you use Flash to skin your video, NCAM’s CCforFlash, or something else, we’ll explore the known options and brainstorm on the possibilities yet seen.

If you’re interested in attending and have questions on this, contact me. Interested in MAGpie, check out the product page at the NCAM site or my MAGpie documentation which starts here.
